How to Choose the Correct Fishing Bait

June 7, 2010

You often ask yourself when heading out for a day on the water. What bait should I use? I want to touch base on this topic because I receive many private messages regarding this subject. When considering which bait to use, you have to factor in a few things such as: Species you are targeting, bait availability, location, weather conditions etc… I’m not going to make this sound complicated because it really isn’t rocket science. One question I get often is: What is the best bait for Tarpon? Tarpon aren’t picky eaters most of the time but sometimes they do fixate on one particular food source at different times of the year. An example would be tarpon fishing in the summer; you can’t beat live pass crabs or finger mullet.

During the fall I like using live lady fish. Tarpon will rarely pass up a live jumbo shrimp that is presented correctly. Finding jumbo shrimp can sometimes be a task on its own. During the day I often chunk or fish live threadfins to entice the silver king. So you can see there are many different seasons or scenarios that I would use different baits. There are many more but I am not here to bore you, I just wanted to give you the gist of it. So do a little research and see what bait is abundant were you plan on fishing, then just match the hatch from there. Until next time, tight lines!

P.S. Have suggestions? We would love to hear them ;)
