Fishing Etiquette

June 8, 2010

Some might ask, what is fishing etiquette? Fishing etiquette simply put is showing fellow fisherman and women respect and courtesy. We have all been there, whether it is in a boat, on a pier or fishing from land. One disgruntle, rude person can spoil your mood while you are out trying to relax and have a good time.

I was out in the kayak not to long ago and a boat sped by going at least 30 mph in a no wake Manatee zone. I took on a few waves and got my gear soaked with saltwater. Pulling lyrics from a popular country song, “I would have settled for a slow down” ;) . It all relates back to morals and common courtesy that most of us were taught as children.

Unfortunately there is always going to be some knuckle head with their moral compass so screwed up they can barely find there way back to the boat ramp. Here is a small list I thought I would compile of immoral things not to do for the ones who don’t know:

1. When a boat is stalking a school of fish, don’t run through them or motor up next to their boat.
2. When you see smaller boats, especially kayaks, canoes etc…Give them the right away and slow down.
3. Don’t run your boat under people fishing from piers.
4. Don’t throw your trash in the water. We want future generations to enjoy fishing.
5. Stop running your boat aground, scarring the flats.
6. For pier fisherman, you only need one rod….Two at the most. Put the other 12 away!

I could go on and on but I think you all get the point. Show respect and get respect. All try and fish in harmony. Until next time, tight lines!

I really hate it when you are fishing from a pier and you have your lines out and the stupid ignorant boaters decide to go through your lines. Let me tell all of you boaters out there, you do not own all the waters. Everyone can fish and you should be respectful of others who love to fish too. I have said my piece, great post!

I was out fishing at the pier in Liberty State Park in Jersey when I saw this party of two fishing. They had, at least, 6 fishing poles set up. It wasn’t enough area for me to set up mine. To avoid a confrontation, I didn’t bother in unpack so I left. People should be more considerate and share – make room for others on the pier. Telling it like it is…

Hello Tom, your best bet is to have a damp towel ready to hold onto the fish, never allowing it to touch the ground. The quicker you can unhook and throw it back without damaging it the better the survival rate. Furthermore, throw the fish head first which will allow water to flow through the gills giving the fish just enough oxygen. I hope these tips help ;)
