Snapper, Grouper and Mackerel 07/25/08-07/26/2008

Monday, July 28th, 2008

All are on the chew right now in the Tampa Bay. The snapper bite has been extremely good. Find a little structure with swift current and most likely you will run into these hard hitting fish. I have ventured out to the South Skyway Pier the last couple days and have limited out easily every time, usually catching between 20 to 30 fish just keeping the larger ones. I also visited the Gandy but things seem to be a little slower over in that area. Get you snapper rod out and get to fishing!

11/14/2007 Skyway Report

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Fishing has been great! The water temps lowered to the right degree and the bite turned on. We caught 7 grouper, all in the range of 18 to 25″. Large baits such as blue runners, mackerel, ladyfish and grunts have been the go to baits for the big boys. Pinfish will help get more action but the majority will probably be short. The kings have been around, I elected not to fish for them this fall because of the crowds but I plan to get in the action come spring. Here are a few pics from 11/14/2007.

Skyway Report

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Well I headed out to the south pier on Saturday prepared to catch a few of them tasty grouper but it didn’t work out quite as planned.  I knew the recent coldfront would have effected the hot bite, but didn’t think it would turn the fishing weekend upside down. To make a long story short I caught a record number of squirel fish and nothing else. I hope everyone else did better ;)

Picknic Island Report

Friday, December 29th, 2006

I have been catching nice redfish and trout around the Picknic Island area. Choice of baits are artifical shads and live shrimp. Work the lure slow and allow it to sit on the bottom for a few seconds. A large majority of the strikes will come from the lure just laying on the ocean floor.

Free line your shrimp, depending on the tide and wind you may want to use a light weight to get the bait to the bottom. I will soon be posting pictures for everyone to see. Until next time, tight lines.

Apollo Beach Snook Fishing

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Last weekend we headed down to Apollo beach me and my girlfreind and fished for a couple of hours. The snook are swarming everywhere down there. Just finding that dock with the best light is key. I was using a white artificial shad with a 1/4 ounce jig head. Stephanie freelined shrimp into the lights and landed 2 snook, I caught a total of 4 snook. In all 6 snook, in 2 hours so it was a good night.

Has anyone else got any snook reports?

Fall Fishing

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

The fishing has been decent if you can dodge the cold front winds. The water temperature is now reaching that magic number of 72 degrees. The skyway area is holding and abundant amount of trout, whiting, grouper, small sharks, a few mackerel and the occasional king fish. Me and my girlfreind and a few buddies went out last weekend and caught a few mackerel, Stephanie caught 2 black tips all by herself, good job!

While stephanie was catching these blacktips, a guy stops to see the action and we get to talking and he is telling me that black tips get up to 300lbs, so I tell him in a nice way that he is crazy. If I am not mistaken the record is like 206. Can someone confirm this? anyway we had a great fishing trip. Is anyone else in the local area doing any good? I would be happy to hear your comments.

Black Tip Sharks

Monday, October 16th, 2006

This weekend was awesome!…me and a couple buddies went out friday night to the south Skyway fishing pier to do some shark fishing, we get there a couple hours before dark and catch some mackerel and ladyfish. we balloon out the both mackerel and a lady…an hour later we had the 4/0 ripping, Chris runs over and sets the hook as he does the line goes limp. He reels down to feel no weight what so ever. As he gets to the end of his line we see that the shark bit throught the 125lb cable like it was mono.

We keep our heads up and balloon a mackerel out on the 9/0…30 minutes later the rod starts screaming then we get an aerial display, about 120lb blacktip…Chris starts to get the gaff ready, then the shark jumps and shakes the hook loose. Well it was  great night but we did not go home with one this time.

If You Are Not Fishing You Should Be!

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Ok, everyone it is time…what time is it? Time to fish! The weather is starting to work with us. As the temperatures drop the fishing heats up, fall and spring are my favorite times to fish.

Every fish in the gulf will be abundant in these next few months…so all pier and land fisherman have there shot at top game. Cobia, kingfish etc…will start to migrate for the winter and they will do it in massive schools. So get up, get your rods and get fishing ;)
