Sometimes redfish can be elusive when the sun is high and the water temps are rising. When the tide is high and it’s a blue bird day, you really want to target deep cuts and also the shaded mangrove shoreline. I am not talking the edge of the mangroves, I mean way back up under the mangroves. The redfish often sit back in the shade ambushing prey as it swims by. Sometimes it can be challenge alone getting fish to feed.

Most of us know of locations that hold fish almost 100% of the time. Redfish have great senses and you can often trigger a bite by cutting up pieces of white bait and tossing them near the mangroves. This will usually pull the fish from cover and allow you the opportunity to hookup. It’s not always easy but you can be productive during the heat of the day. Until next time, tight lines!

The redfish have been schooling in large groups throughout the Tampa Bay. With the full moon you can expect extremely low tides and great tidal flow for the incoming. Locate a good flat with an oyster bed and grass flat near by and you are destin to do well. Fish the incoming tide, the fish will be most aggressive and scouring the flats for dead crabs, shrimp and fish. You can also throw artificial such as a top water plug early. This is an efficient way to locate fish. Most importantly just get out and have a good time!

I have been catching nice redfish and trout around the Picknic Island area. Choice of baits are artifical shads and live shrimp. Work the lure slow and allow it to sit on the bottom for a few seconds. A large majority of the strikes will come from the lure just laying on the ocean floor.

 

Free line your shrimp, depending on the tide and wind you may want to use a light weight to get the bait to the bottom. I will soon be posting pictures for everyone to see. Until next time, tight lines.
