i vowed never to bring the 12' bait net out to the skyway again after last time i brought it out...but needed some quick bait for the little tunny. I let the net sink...didn't see any shiny flashes, so i let it sink some more all the way to the bottom. Begin to pull it up, and i thought i snagged the piling...but nooooo, it was full of bait. After a busted knuckle and help from 2 others, we got the bait up...enough to fill 4 buckets. We were on the little tunny all day, til where my forearms were cramping/locking up. Conservatively speaking, probably hooked into 50 between the 3 of us. There were a few mackeral mixed in as well.
The goliath was caught near the baitshop...my estimates was around 400, but the one's fishing said it was a 600lber. Believe they used a whole little tunny for bait.

Hey Aqua, just curious, do you keep those for Shark bait, or do have some secret recipe to make them edible. Everybody I know who has tried them couldn't even get past the first bite. I personally have never tried, just cutting them up for bait is bad enough. Like I said, just curious, never thought a Sail Cat would be good until I tried one.

Aqua, not implying that you would let a fine fighting species like that go to waste. My family is also a big fish eating group, and we have tried several fish that was not necessarily considered to be great table fare, but turned out to be pretty good. I am still waiting to try smoking some smaller Jacks one of these days, just lately, they been running about 8-10 pounds. Fish on, tight lines and full coolers to you.

Very nice haul indeed. I have a pal that knows food who says that prepared right tuny can be nejoyed. I am a lil skeptical, but would try it once Smile

Fillet - I regualrly filet big jacks, skin and remove the big blood line then smoke them. need to use big ones as after the bloodline removal there is not alot left over...They make excellent fish dip...trust me and try it Smile

Man I miss catching them big Jacks lol I think that most people dont like Jacks, Mackeral, and Bonito because they didnt prepare it right. I was at the market to my amazment they were selling Toadfish. You know the ugly looking fish that no one even wants to touch? lol They were selling them for $5 per lbs.

here's a tip to help with your over stuffed cast net. take an old shower curtain or an old blue tarp or even a sheet of visquene with you when you go to the pier. dump your net in the shower curtain instead of trying to dump them into a bucket, and then just fold the curtain like a funnel and pour into a bucket. it saves me a bunch of time and the aggrivation of trying to scoop up 100+ bait fish off the pier.

my main probably is getting the castnet over the rail haha When you have a hundred some pounds of bait in the net, it's kinda hard to pull it up with the little hand line Smile Took 4 of us last time to get that net up.
But that's a good tip...most of the time, i have a little hand net available...not too bad using that to scoop the bait up.

Thanks for the tip on the Jacks, Cookinman, next big one over the rail goes on the smoker. Several of my buds say they have done them and said I would be pleasantly surprised. Kinda thought a smaller one would be better, but didn't think about cutting the blood line out, wouldn't be much left, your right.
