In 1 month from now. I will be buying 2 high ratio any over 3:1 conventional reels & maybe 2 rods for grouper fishing at skyway. I'm also buying a heavy duty spin cast reel. Also I'm looking for a 9/0 reel or a 12/0 for shark fishing. And if anyone wants to sell a nice casting net thats good for the pier. At the end of march Is when i'll be buying this. this will give anyone time to think about it or get things together if anyone is willing to selling. I'm buying good quality rod & reels. thanks guys

I am looking to get rid of a GREAT penn 6/0 for $90 mint condition.....
Small for big sharks, but it will do nicely for grouper and smaller up to 150-200 # sharks. |

Bit of a dumb question here but what 4/0, 6/0, stuff mean? I know your talking about conventional reels (more of a spinning guy myself) but thats about it.

Never a dumb question. The 4/0 and 6/0 etc. they are referring to is a Conventional reel, just as you said that's made by Penn. These reels are basically considered "Deep Sea" reels, but really they are just for the larger species that can be found anywhere. The term 6 ott or 6/0 was originally meant to classify this reel as a 6/ocean or saltwater type reel. They have been made from 1/0 to I believe I saw somewhere a 20/0. The 9/0 and 12/0 are probably the most popular reels among the serious Shark fisherman with some die hards using a 14/0 (a true monster). Personally a 6/0 is enough to kick my butt if fished for a good length of time. I don't put my rod down and set the clicker, I have been rocked up by Grouper before, so it's "hands on" for me. Go to Penn.com and you can veiw the reels. Penn has come out with some new high speed versions of these reels that are real nice. Check it out.

thanks for the response and I'm planning on coming down to Florida for a few weeks and I plan on fishing A LOT. I'll be staying in Sarasota (I have family there) and will fishing piers mostly so could you guys recommend a good reel that wont cost me to much (being 16 and as you all know part time jobs dont pay very well) but will be able to tangle with most fish (snappers, bonitos the occasional grouper maybe) and sorry for hijacking the thread.

thats ok, i think i perty much found every thing in need. But to your question. I would say spinning or small conventional reel that says 20-25 lbs & the same with the rod, u'll be fine with all three fishes most likly not a big grouper, would probly rock up on yea. I would put 20-30 lbs power pro line on it and u'll do great.

How much are you looking to spend??? If your going to be fishing alot then I would go ahead and spend the extra money and get a better reel. I would recommend the Okuma VSystem... Thier pricey but well worth the money. Hbn and I just bought 2 today lol Plus it comes with a 5 year warranty... If anything breaks then they'll replace it for free...
