| I would recommend getting a 4/0 Penn without the level wind. The level winds often become more of a problem then a help. You will also find that the Penns without the level winds are more durable. |

The Penn 309M can be purchased new at Boaters World or on line at their web site for around $59. This has a level wind, which I am not particularly fond of, but if you are new to conventional reels it would be a good start. The reel holds 350 yards of 30# or proportionately less of higher pound test. Coupled with a good heavy or medium heavy 7' rod and you should have a nice starter rig. You gotta start somewhere or you will never end of with 40 or 50 rod and reels. Please don't tell my wife, she seldom goes out to the barn.

Just to add to this post. My previous advice was based around using cheaper tackle, which is fine but here is my current grouper setup:
8' custom Calstar equipped with a Diawa saltist 30
Spooled with 270 yards of 80lb pp with 55 yards of 80lb top shot
10/0 Gamakatsu hooks

Hello,
I am new to the Forum, I think it is awesome. I am from Pittsburgh originally. I now live in Bradenton, FL. Anyway I have been to the Skyway pier many times. Some days are good and some bad. Its either hit or miss for me. I go to the South pier and I either use finger length mullet or the white bait from the water. Does anyone have any suggestions on bait to use and rig set up. I use multiple heavy duty rods with a 4 oz barrel sinker. I also use a steel leader. Does it sound like I have the right set up or am I missing something. Also, I wanted to know what areas of the south pier have the best structure for grouper fishing? If some one could help me that would be great.
Thanks,
-Ryan |

Hello Christian Durham,
After a while you will just know what size reel is a 3/0, 4/0 etc... Most of the time when we refer to 4/0 etc, we are speaking of the Penn reels. Many other brands will describe there reels with exts such as FH, MX ad so on because there are so many. What normally sets them a part and makes them more expensive is the amount of ball bearing the reel holds.
The more ball bearings the smoother the reel. A good number of ball bearings to have in a reel are 6. I have seen up close to 20, but it really isn't necessary in my opinion. Choosing line for your reel you want to do carefully. If you decide to purchase a conventional reel, such as a 4/0 Penn and you want to spool it with Power Pro then you will easily be able to put 80lbs test on the reel. If it where mono then I would recommend 50lb test. The reason the difference is Power Pro has a very small diameter compared to mono. Another thing to keep in mind, Power Pro isn't cheap and will cost you around $60.00 to fill up as to mono will cost on $7.00 for a spool of 50lb test Ande line. I personally use mono on my reels from 3/0 to 6/0 and Dacron line on my larger reels such as a 9/0 to 12/0.
When choosing a reel you have to consider a lever or star drag. The lever drag was ultimately created for trolling. There is a flaw with the lever drag, you can't lock them down. So if a big grouper is taking you into the rocks and you want to stop him, your chances are slim. The star drags depending on which reel you buy do lock down and I think are better for the pier (My opinion). I don't recommend the level wind reel. The level wind limits your casting abilities and will ultimately fall off after so much use. I actually had one cost me a fish once but I won’t go there. After using a regular conventional reel with no lever wind you will quickly become efficient with it. I hope I answered all your questions, let us know if you have any others |
I have a question that is what do you mean the lever drags don't lock down? Here lock down means put it to it to full drag. Me thinks you can't disable the drag and me thinks I would not want to. _________________ quote of the week

Hello rtoner79, we have been having great success with the balloon method. The rig you mention will work but it's most popular in deeper water. The lighter the weight the better. You want the bait to look as natural as possible.

We don't like to share numbers on open forums, but you can view the aerial satellite views on the homepage of the site to find the rock piles. The rock piles run parallel from the bridge and are spaced about 30 yards apart.
Best baits for grouper at the piers: pigfish, pinfish, bluefish, and yellow tail jacks. |

| I did notice the rock piles. They look like they are pretty far from the pier. I did see a few people using the balloons... I like to use the heavy 4 oz weight to get the bait out there... Also, How do you hook up the rig?, Do you use a balloon about the size of a softball and a small weight? Not quite sure how it all works. Can you explain? |

| you also might wanna try fluorocarbon leaders, its more expensive but for most fish species it'll pay off. |

| I have used many higher end reels like fin-or and they didn't have level wind on them. It seems to be more of a preference? |
