Lately, it seems it's just the 3 of us. Come on folks lets get some reports, stories or just some topics of interest. Like what started you fishing, where your from, who inspired you, what ever. I am getting tired of scrolling for some good topics here. Love this site, and the folks I have so far got to chat with.

Filletnrelease it seems there has been more readers then posters lately, I believe as the site gets more popular we will get more experienced anglers who will want to help. Many new anglers register every day. If you want to contribute and help the site just keep posting
P.S. I appreciate everyone who does help out and post. Regardless I want the site to be a great forum for all to chat and learn. |

I am sure you are right Pierfish. I myself have been a forum member of the Skyway Forum for quite sometime, but for a while all I did was read the posts and never contributed. It's much more fun folks when you join in and let your opinions and stories be heard. With that said, Pierfish you have a great site site here and I am sure it will just get better. I have been looking for that UM hat on the bridge, one day we shall meet my friend, until then, fish on, tight lines and full coolers.

| With now over 2000 members the site really is doing great. I am sure people will be more active once they get familiar with the board. For the getting better part, I plan on having a site makeover soon. |

It might help for those of you who are more senior and experience fishermen to write some content.
It seems to me like you have a good base of new anglers looking for information to which you could cater.
Myself, I've fished all over the country in freshwater, recently moved to Florida and wanted to do some fishing. I don't have a boat, so I looked online for piers that I could use to get out into the saltwater and catch some larger fish.
I started out buying Walmart rods and reels, being as cheap as possible getting new tackle, because all of the stuff I had was ultralight from fishing for trout, small bass and panfish over the years (and was also in storage).
I came here looking for information on how to catch saltwater fish after getting skunked during my first trip to the Skyway.
I would like to read more about how to catch various species of fish. Grouper, Mackeral, Kingfish, etc.. Not only what tackle, terminal tackle, line, etc. but spots and techniques. What works best for _____? How to fish for them (jigging, live bait (what type, what method),), ingoing tide, outgoing, most productive times, etc. |

Dimzer, what piers, bridges have you tried so far, and what were you fishing with? Perhaps a little schooling in the art of salt water is all you need. You are obviously a veteran fisherman. Also what types of bait have you tried so far and the type of rigs.

Mostly I've watched what the other fishermen at the piers have been doing. I've fished mainly the Skyway North pier and Gandy facing South starting in November.
I've tried livelining pinfish towards the rock piles on the side of the NSP facing the water on the outgoing tide, but all I managed to catch were a few dolphin, who tore up my cheap tackle. Also lost 2 rods that way (one snapped in half / one yanked over the edge).
I tried pre-tied grouper rigs (large egg sinkers) with pinfish and large greens, never had any luck though, just more dolphin. Also the pinfish tend to pluck out the eyes of the greens when they are near the bottom, killing them.
I've actually had the most success fishing for mackeral. I started out drift fishing on the incoming tide under schools of greens using a long shank hook and about a half an ounce of weight connected directly to the line. Caught a few 20-22"ers, lost a lot more to cutoffs in spite of 80 lb. mono leaders. Caught a few trout that way I had to throw back since they were out of season. Mostly though, the pinfish come up and snag the small greens before the gamefish have a shot at them, in my experience.
I've also had success with mackeral on large 1/0 2/0 sabiki rigs jigged near the pylons. Many more cutoffs to deal with though, very frustrating. Also mostly smaller fish that way. Also caught a few Pompano, small sea bass, a large stingray I couldn't get up to the pier, etc. on sabikis.
I've tried gotchas (only hooked one small tarpon who spit the hook on the first jump) and spoons with no real success.
Best method for me seems to be jigging near the bridges. I can't seem to catch anything other than macks with the tackle I have.
Going to try fishing this weekend with "spec" jigs Pierfish mentioned this weekend and see what I come up with. (up north a 'spec' is a crappie, so I'm going to pick up some of those and some speckled trout jigs.) Most likely going to try wire leaders though, even though I hear they slow down the bite.
Wouldn't mind catching something besides macks - they are pretty oily fish. |

Dimzer, let me know what your schedule is like. I would be more than happy to meet you out at the skyway pier and load you up with as much info as I can. I also have been fishing my entire life, and I know how to catch fish and how to handle fish but I none of that matters if I can't get teh fish to bite, I have been here for 2 1/2 years now and the first year I was here I was miserable and frustrated fishing from the skyway pier. I was ready to quit, the only luck i was having was on the flats with some expierienced people. After researching and reading everything I could get my hands on and hooking up with some local skyway pier rats I have become addicted to the skyway pier... Anyway , Let me know your schedule and we can meet up for some fishing.... I have learned to catch the following at the skyway pretty consistently
mackeral
pompano
snapper
grouper
tarpon
goliath grouper
shark
snook
kingfish ( I know how, just haven't tried much for these)
I'm know expert but I can help
That goes for anyone else who wants to learn how to fish the skyway,,,, _________________ Jason
