well a trolling reel is conventional reel as well. i think the penn 113s are trolling reels. just dont get one of those reels with a levelwind. its the thin wire thing on top that moves the line back and forth so it spools on evenly. it will break.
you learn to cast it pretty quick. just control the speed of the spool with your thumb. it backlashes when the spool spins faster than the line comes off and it wraps around itself. the daiwas are more forgiving with a brake that limits how freely the spool spins. not sure if any other reels have tha feature.
when the tide is moving strong you dont have to cast. you can just drop a bait in the water and the current will take it out. ill only cast when i want my bait on a certain spot that it wont swim to or when the tide is pretty slack. |

| The high end reels are a little better with the level winds but ultimately they break off and when I first started saltwater fishing 13 yrs ago I had them cost me a few nice fish. |

I just moved to St. Pete for a new job and to finally be near the water, came from Georgia. I fished the Sandy Hook Bay(NJ) growing up but never really knew what I was doing, spent most of my time trying to figure out what to do, crabbing, and pedalling back and forth to Bay, about 7 miles roundtrip. Blueclaws are delicious and easy to catch up there.
I am excited about pier fishing in Florida and looking to get licenses within the next month, anyone know of any clubs or books about pier or shorefishing in Tampa. I have some old gear and a nice Shimano reel from a few years back that will be coming down from my parents soon.
I also plan on buying a new pole and gear when I get some money saved up as the move drained me right now.
I appreciate any feedback and look forward to skyway pier, I only walked it so far but I'll post on my first experience. Any advice will be welcome in terms of where to find cheap gear, nice spots, and what I should know about Tampa |
