Went out to skyway last week end. I caught one spanish mackerel that ran into my hook and pin fish and green backs.
Tried to catch something with them but nothing happened. Sad

Don't give up yet Digger, we all have lulls. How were you fishing those Greenbacks and Pins. Give me a little more detail and perhaps I may be able to give you a couple pointers. Right now with the storms and low pressure, fishing is a bit tough.

Filletnrelease,
I do have to admit to a lack of knowledge, but I did try several different tactics.

I hooked the pin fish near the tail and let them swim in the out going tide.
I tried with a little weight and one with a bobber.

I also hooked the greens in the upper lip or in the back with and without weights and or bobber.

I caught the mackerel on a gothcha

Sounds like you were fishing pretty much the same as I would have. Like the fact that you tried different tactics as well. Hard to beat a Gotcha especially when the Macks are biting. Did you move around to different areas on the Pier. Also do you know where the rock piles are located, that can be a big help.

I did move around some. I started out close to shore worked my way out to the end and then back in close. I got the mackerel in close.
I sort of know where the rocks are. I can see them when the sun is right
but I don't understand the numbering.

The rocks start somewhere around the 2nd restroom and run out to the end. Look between the spans, you will see sets of 4 pilings then a set of 6 with angled pilings. The rocks are out from the set of 6 plus or minus. On an incoming you can still freeline baits under the closed span, there are rocks on that side too. Just keep your rod tip down and reel.

The numbering is difficult for anyone to understand, since, most are faded off. When driving onto the pier, pull over just past the second restroom. Then, facing the Gulf, the bridge posts have numbers on them, near the top . If you can find the ones numbered in the 70's, you can figure out where #80 is. Fish there the same way you did, letting pins swim out with the tide.
