i know just the perfect goliath rod for the skyway. its a Gator Glass blank thats 8' and is rated up to 50# but will EASILY EASILY fish 80#. my buddy gave me one that he sent off to california to have wrapped by a pretty well known builder.
the best part is that this blank retails for $20. if it were going to be my own personal rod, i'd spiral wrap the guides and cut the rod down to 7 or 7'6 and use a pretty long upper grip thats high density (you want to rail that rod like no tomorrow!) and a hypalon rear grip. i would just use a 6/0 so i might be tempted to not even use a reel seat. just put some steel guides on it and build this rod pretty cheap. no need to spend alotta money on a fish you catch just for fun. i wouldnt spend more than $70 or 80 on the blank and components!
i'd build a totally separate one for heavy shark fishing (80# mono). this would probably cost a bit more depending on the components... $100-$150 rough guess. i'd have to do more research though. |

I have a 6\0 with 50 lbs mono uni-knoted to 100 yards of 250 lbs mono. I want a rod that I know won't snap on me while halling up a 300 lbs + goliath off the bottom under skyway. I have a heavy dudy rod But not sure if it will hold up & I try'ed to use it in Dec. & i got hit 1 time under the bait shop at ssp but misted the hook set, he let go anyways this info might help u out somewhat. |
